Yuletide 2018 Recs
Starting my rec post since I've got a few already! Note that there are Tess of the Road spoilers in the Seraphina rec.
Tamora Pierce
the heart in my chest on wings - Tricksters, Aly/Dove (bg. Aly/Nawat) - post-canon fic: a really sweet slice of life fic sort of checking in with a bunch of Aly's relationships, especially her friendship with Taybur and private relationship with Dove, and her day-to-day work. The voices are great, especially Aly's banter.
The friendship in the shawl - Emelan, Sandry & Briar & Daja & Tris - Just a perfect little post-Will Circle friendship fic; Tris is away, and there's a lovely domestic scene with the three in Summersea sharing around one of her letters, and then Sandry decides to make her a shawl with some of each of their magic involved. Cozy friendship & just enough craft descriptions ensue.
Reforged - Emelan, Sandry & Briar & Daja & Tris - A warm blanket of a fic, also set post-Will, showing their lives intertwined again and ways they reach out and fit back together. There's a little of Briar's recovery, some Tris at Lightsbridge, aftermath of Daja and Rizu's breakup, and lots of love and working together.
Seraphina
Suite Infanta - Seraphina/Glisselda/Lucian - set between Shadow Scale and Tess of the Road: music, bittersweet moments with Orma, and both him and Selda reacting to Seraphina's pregnancy.
What We Do in the Shadows
catch my disease - Vladislav accidentally goes viral, Nick tells the gang what 'viral' means, and they immediately try to do that several more times. Nominally to get back at the Beast. The voices are great, their antics and the internet stuff made me laugh, and it's surprisingly sweet in the end.
Behind the Shadows - Outsider POV and found media-type snippets reveal how the people around the vampires see them. Feat. local true crime forums, an unfazed Uber driver, and some fun dramatic irony. I couldn't help giggling out loud.
Old Kingdom
A fire, a burning flame - Sabriel & Mogget - Maybe some of the magic of this was not quite realizing until partway through that this was a world where Terciel lives and he and Sabriel fight Kerrigor off together, but this was an odd, lovely piece of AU that had my mind following tracks outwards from what's on the page wondering what else might happen in this storyline. Vivid imagery and an expert Sabriel facing some real challenges make this feel spot on with canon.
Campaign: Star Wars
Caf for Two - Blue/Zero - You can't go wrong with some Zeblue fake dating, and I love Zero's not-quite-denial and Blue's absolute awkwardness as a human being. Also, there's some flustered Blue, helmetless Zero, and long-suffering Aava.
