As of the other day, Reading the Remnants now has a complete fan translation! I enjoyed both the main story and the extras and I'm hoping more people will check it out!
Lately my executive function's been non-cooperative for things that aren't reading. I'm hoping to make more progress on the timing stuff I've been helping with this week/weekend (I'm kinda embarrassed about how long this installment's taking me).

does anyone else really feel like reading bbanghak right now? no? just me? ok. I lost my mind a little bit with this video, been thinking about it for days... only to see this one today and OKAY!!! OKAY!!!!! and also this was really, really cute. milbbanghak being silly, my beloveds... (feat. changmin coming to the rescue)
[ETA: LOOK AT THEM!!!!!!]
you may think well, you've written bbanghak before, you can write what you want to read, right? and the thing is! I can't! I've been hating every single sentence I type, I don't know why! (I know why, I'm in a foul mood...) basically, fuck me.
I can laugh about it too, though - my sunwoo-centric wip? it's a racer au. it's sunmiljuric as racers. so these pics made me chuckle.

this video too. these should've sent me straight into the wip to churn out 10k in one sitting. perfect inspiration, 10/10, thank you, boyz. sorry too because who knows if I'm ever finishing that wip.
I guess it's not even just bbanghak thoughts lately, all the hakric too? BBANGHAKRIC went to a concert together?! what is happening...

sunhak has been really cute too, but I don't trust my judgment on that as an inveterate sunhaker. and I don't think I'm the only one who has been thinking a lot about sangnyu lately :(

it's been a month and I'm still not over this.
lastly, as a bonus, I was going through some old tweets and LOL remember when eric was THE fanservice king? he built the juric ship from the ground up, which is funny considering how shy he is about it now...

Series final reaction — Person of Interest
Apr. 17th, 2025 09:43 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
A. and I finished Person of Interest tonight.
Now that I've finished it, I can dive into the wiki and the fanfic without worrying about getting spoiled. I'll probably even write some fanfic of my own — based on the parts of the show I enjoyed most and the style of fanfic I tend to write, expect my fanfic to be "season 3 forever."
At any rate, I really enjoyed the series, I simultaneously wish there had been more of it and am glad that it didn't go on so far that it wore out its welcome, and I recommend it to those of you who haven't seen it!

The fan translations of Reading the Remnants and To Embers we Return have both updated today!
I'm really enjoying both of them! Reading the Remnants has only one extra left to go and I can't wait to see the resolution of this adventure (the most recent extra contains the first half of it). It's still early in To Embers We Return, but it sounds like there's an interesting arc starting soon (I like the main characters' pining, but I can't wait to see more of the plot).

One of the kids asked about why we learn aikido, a martial art, if the goal is to simply not be in situations where we need to fight. Said kid got, after class ended, a discussion of that where each of the three people responding had a slightly different (but cohesive!) take on the matter, which boils down to: Try not to get into a fight, but train yourself so that should it ever happen you know how to respond as safely as possible for everyone involved.
The other layer of aikido, the one that doesn't happen on the mat, is something I think the parents heard in our answers but the kids probably didn't. Which is: the philosophy of aikido can be applied to any situation, not just physical conflict. It's aikido when you defuse an argument before it happens. It's aikido to see a misunderstanding and clarify the matter. It's aikido any time someone comes at you with aggression and you respond with de-escalation.
The kids seemed fascinated by this, and accepted the explanation. The parents were quite delighted by it.
Also in work news:
Apparently, starting Monday, we're doing overtime for a number of weeks that could be just two, could be a month, and could just be... ongoing... They're gonna judge on a week-to-week basis. (This is not mandatory. They cannot make it mandatory. It's just set up so that you need to explicitly opt out on a day-to-day basis, so realistically we're probably all doing overtime most of the time.)
It'll be 10hr days M-Th, and then our normal 6hr day on Friday. Apparently if they get more pressure about us being ~behind schedule~ (which: hah, who's surprised, it's a big project and also one of the things we're working on is an add that someone else fucked up and we're being paid to fix) they might add Friday overtime and also Saturday overtime, neither of which I'm going to say yes to (I like having weekends, thanks, work eats enough time as it is). But it sure will be interesting if that becomes a Thing!

Interesting translation fact I learned this week
Apr. 16th, 2025 09:48 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
In an article in the March 2025 issue of Multilingual magazine, I learned that while there's a sizable minority in Spain who speak Catalan, very few of those people are monolingual in Catalan. Therefore, it's common for Spanish publishers to buy both the Spanish and Catalan translation rights for a book but only produce a Spanish edition. They thus get most of the Catalan readers (because most of them also read Spanish) without the expense of producing a Catalan edition and without the chance that someone else will produce a Catalan edition and cut into their sales. This strikes me as yet another of those things that's a best practice within the "rules" of capitalism while at the same time being a generally scummy thing to do.

The unions' regional apprentice competition happened over last weekend (read: mostly Friday, actually, but it started Thursday and ended Saturday), and was very fun and... tbh easier than I expected???
which, uh. is probably why I was in-the-moment surprised and after-some-thought unsuprised that I placed first in the category I was there for (second-year apprentices).
( more specifics/rambling about this )
also possibly the funniest conversation I had during the event happened on the last evening, when I was chatting with two other apprentices. we ended up talking about how we'd all grown up playing D&D 3.5e and now play 5e and have Opinions about which edition we like better (4e got mentioned as being a completely different type of game and therefore not worth talking about). mostly it was like "okay how do you weight realism (what do you mean by that?) vs mechanical simplicity vs ability to make a build you like (and what even is that build)".

It's exhausting trying to keep up with the craziness coming out of the White House right now.
Tariffs are go- oh wait, just kidding- gotcha, they're happening for real! I'm sure my 401k has tanked, but the cheeto who shall not be named told all his cronies to buy cheap stocks right before he cancelled the tariffs and they increased their wealth by billions in a day... I brought it up at work and my (conservative) coworkers were all, 'oh it's a good time to buy, we have time, we aren't retiring for decades, this will be good for us in the long term'. Well what about all the people on the cusp of retirement who just lost all their savings?
And I'm partially thinking that this just goes to show why we should be doing pensions and not betting our retirement livelihood on the damn stock market.... but it's not like I have a choice, do I?
And meanwhile the SAVE Act is once again on the table, which its supporters say will stop voter fraud by making everyone provide extra documentation for proof of citizenship before registering to vote. But voter fraud has been consistently proven to be nearly non-existent - certainly in too small of an amount to sway the outcome of any vote - and the only impact of the SAVE Act would be a chilling effect on voter registration, making it harder for large swathes of people (myself included!) to be registered.

Thankfully it hasn't passed the Senate - yet - but it's taking up a lot of space in my brain.
And that's really what I wanted to write about at the moment - how much of this noise is bouncing around in front of me, grabbing for my attention, and how exhausting it is to be constantly pulled to the next thing, the next outrage, the next human rights violation, the next power grab from the cheeto who must not be named. I feel like I'm drowning under wave after wave of malicious political action that I'm powerless to do anything about.
It's terrifying how much of this rhymes with the Diary of Anne Frank. If we're making history, I'd rather rhyme with the French Revolution and break out the guillotines.

What have I done this last week? Well, I watched Time Raiders (2016), yet another entry in the dmbj franchise. It was incredibly dumb. No regrets. Everything about that climactic scene with the snake princess was hilarious. I didn't need that one shot with the car window perfectly framing Sandra Ma's boobs, though, it was a very stupid way of committing to the male gaze.
I watched Cunk on Life (2024). At first I was underwhelmed by it somehow built as it went on, so by the time of "Is it harder to enter the kingdom of heaven since brexit?" I was about dying with laughter.
Also, I watched The Fall Guy (2024). I had to keep reminding myself it ran on Hollywood logic, not real life Australia logic (which shouldn't have been hard, because this is very much a movie about movies, but I think setting it mostly in Sydney, a place I have actually stepped foot in, meant my brain kept defaulting to judging it by real world logic instead). Anyway, it's slickly made with a lot of very good stunts, and Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt certainly are charming in it.
I got further into watching A Moment But Forever, but then I had to pause because I was about to run out regular subscription episodes, at the same time as premium VIP users were getting all of them, and idk, I might just not finish it. It has some good things going for it, but it also has the worst performance I've seen Wang Hongyi give and so much clunky exposition and character philosophy infodumps. At some point the villains are chatting and one of them infodumps their backstory and the other straight up says 'I already know all that', it's so clunky.
I also watched The Warrior From Sky (2021), an iQiyi streaming movie packed with too much plot that doesn't quite rise to the level of mediocre. Ci Sha has been a lot better in other things.
I attempted to watch Joy Ride (2023), but I didn't find it funny enough, and then I felt the need to look up if the twist was going to be exactly what I thought it would be, and it was.
Also, I watched about fifteen minutes of The Great Wall (2016) on Netflix, thinking how bad can it be?? Terrible, it turns out, some of the most stale cliched dialogue known to man and a waste of every actor in it. But Andy Lau is hot in it, so I guess there's that visual bonus. I may or may not pick it up again on a later date when I'm looking for something to heckle.

Just discovered today that a cough and flu-like symptoms, which I've been experiencing for the past few days, are a fairly common side effect of the antiseizure med I'm on. Mere words cannot express how unthrilled I am by this. I want to post things other than my medical problems, and to read the things that you all post and leave you comments on them, but right now I have neither the time nor the energy to do so. But please, know that the desire is there: If you've done well recently, consider me as having congratulated you. Conversely, if things have gone badly for you, consider me as having commiserated. In the meantime, I'll actually be over here doing the bare minimum I have to do to make it through day-to-day life, then going to bed early. (Which in and of itself should tell you how badly I'm doing, given my oft-stated resentment of the need to sleep.)

I was posting a comment this morning and attempted to refer to someone's Threads handle using the standard @ notation, and I noticed that when I did, it showed using in the posted comment as a DW username. For example:
brithistorian. I didn't do that by using the DW account link button or the html tags. I typed "@" and then "brithistorian" with no space between. Now that I know that I can do that, it's useful, but coming as a surprise, it was rather unwelcome.
