I've been wanting to write up kind of thoughts on albums here—I'm trying to listen to new-to-me music more generally, and I originally was gonna explore more local stuff (and probably will!) but I have also been listening to so much kpop. Really especially been feeling the kind of bubblegum vibes; I'm working my way through the TWICE bibliography, but VIVIZ was another excellent rec I got for this mood.
I was really planning to listen to their first mini-album when I finished another album this morning, and instead saw they had a new one out that I didn't know about! Anyway, all this to say I've listened to VarioUS 3 or 4 times today and that's enough for me to finally feel familiar enough to have some thoughts on the songs. By which I mean: to fall a little in love with all of them, which is what tends to happen to me as I get familiar with an album. Here's what I love about them.
PULL UP is just a bop. Love some fun textured instrumentals + a good beat with classic pop vocals.
Blue Clue was as immediately compelling to me as PULL UP. Love the like syncopated rhythm sections w the buzzy electronic backing. Extremely cool.
Love or Die is just kinda pleasant and funky! I think we're continuing the theme of having some fun textures under the silky-smooth vocals. I loooove the guitar in this, & the repeated "you can do better than that" is infectious. This one just goes down real easy
Vanilla Sugar Killer is what i think of as a pink song. Both the imagery and kind of the vibe, you know? Shimmery group vocals over maybe not the most memorable instrumentation, but it's a bop. These often take a while to really settle into my brain and become individual songs but once they do I'll find myself humming them and wanting to listen to them again. This one's getting there now.
Overdrive: I really want this to play over like the closing credits of something (complimentary). The movement may be chill and floaty but it's taking you on a journey. Some enjoyable tempo changes, a horn section! (We love a horn section).
So Special's like, sassy strings are such a vibe. And the piano + snapping break is like. You know when you stretch out a rubber band and use it to catapult a crumpled up piece of paper? I feel like that ball of paper as we go back into the main beat/melody for the end
