Voiceteam 2020: Last Day Rec Post!

Voiceteam 2020 was such a fun experience. I’m going to start off this rec post with a shoutout to my team, Blue Team Bleu, absolutely the sweetest bunch of people and so much fun to work with throughout this month. Even if I have not called out a thing you did specifically, know that I was enjoying seeing your stuff go up, getting to be in multivoice projects with you, just chatting and having a fun time. 

There’s still so much I have to get around to listening to, but here’s my rec post as of this last day of the challenge proper. (This is also a Frankenstein of my Blue Team rec post and a general rec post I had started in Google Docs; there’s a little style mismatch, ha).

BLUE TEAM BLEU RECS

What’s Up Danger (read by cheshiretears)

Cheshiretears did a great job on this one. I don’t really know the fandom, but I so enjoyed the balance of emotion and clarity in the narration. There were some great voices too: the principal sounded so cartoon-old-man-ish, and listening to the kids fumble trying to make up excuses was adorable, A+. 

Blue Team Bleu Presents: Blue Da Ba Dee Da Ba Dye the Blue Whale (read by eafay70)

This was kind of the first sense I had of Blue Team’s whale mascot emerging into a Character, and this sort of set the mood for our team’s vibe for the whole month in a lovely way. This is so gentle and enthusiastic and sweet and I love it to pieces.

I want to preface this by saying I recruited these folks to read this because it is a favorite from Yuletide 2018 and I didn’t think I could do it justice, but this turned out so good. Zhadyra knocked it out of the park with the character voices during the narration, and Baskets brought the internet bits to life. I WILL be relistening to this!

Everybody’s Free (To Wear Mithril) (performed by Akaihyou)

I was completely unaware of this piece before this project, but it is so funny and so beautifully performed - seriously, the rhythm and expression and timing on this is impeccable. I keep going back to it because it is just so satisfying?

an atla song to the tune of the office theme song (written and performed by Oceantail)

This is such a joyous encapsulation of both the show and the whole vibe of this challenge. It makes me smile every time I listen to it. The lines fit very well, and the last few make me giggle. Also, the exasperated chuckle at the end only adds to its charm. 

NON-BLUE RECS

Since You Ask Me for a Tale of Magic (read by akikotree)

Since you asked me for a recommendation… My goodness, I adore everything about this John Finnemore’s Souvenir Programme podfic. It took a fic that already does a really good job of getting some of the core things about Storyteller skits - plays on expectations, false word etymology puns, the Storyteller’s special and focused brand of obliviousness - and made it feel even more like a piece of the show. Akikotree perfectly captured Finnemore’s intonations in this role without even doing an accent (although: there is an accent later that works absolutely perfectly with the comedy around the character they use it for). The intro music (both sets) set the tone perfectly (that like, horn intro for the Storyteller ALWAYS activates the joy centers of my brain). Just, chefkiss, beautifully done.

The Mando and the Kid (edited by blackglass, feat. so so many of us)

TWENTY. FIVE. VOICES. And it came out squeaky clean - all the timings are so good, everyone sounds fantastic, I love this filk so much. 

geese goose and Everybody (Goose is Back) by carboncopies

The best music makes you cry. These made me cry...with laughter! The high concepts in themselves are delightful, but the execution took it that extra step. The harmonizing and the vocal effects on geese goose made it sound amazingly close to the original, and they took the one goose sound effect and make it a bunch of different notes so goose could sing Everbody by themselves? Amazing. Iconic. I love these.

WAFFLE OR WAFFLE NOT - EPISODE 76 (by bessyboo, cantarina, exmanhater, theleanansidhe, and reena_jeunkins)

I adore the original waffleverse story, and any follow-up has my interest. This one is in video form, and absolutely delightful (feat. convincing and adorable opening and ending animations a la the YouTube series Waffle or Waffle Not? claims to be!). It’s so lovely to return to these characters in this ‘verse and see what they’re up to, plus of course there’s a new cursed waffle to enjoy. I like the little details put into this too in video form - Padme is artfully off-camera, as she would be, e.g.

Thank you so much for including the Storyteller piece in your rec list!! That's such a oddball little fandom I was excited that even a few Voiceteam people knew about. And I had SUCH fun making! It's only my own favorite things I made this month. And what a month it was for making things!!!
