AO3 Year in Review

minnarrI shared these in a discord server the other week, but I kind of want to put them here for posterity! I put the fics I bookmarked between 1/1/2022 and 12/21/2022 (so a majority of the fics I read for the first time this year; I try to bookmark everything I read because that's my check, I've read this marker) into a Google sheet, then generated some pie charts. I also have thoughts on those results and lists of all the fandoms and relationships I read this year.
Charts
I was surprised that the Zhou Zishu Cinematic Universe (lmao) edged out MDZS/The Untamed this year! Even though I think of Word of Honor as my main fandom (it's the one I am active in dedicated fandom spaces for, a thing that is not really true of CQL) it feels sometimes like I read much more CQL fic. However, part of this is me re-reading longfics to get through work, lol.
Combined numbers for those two:
97 The Untamed + MDZS + The Untamed/MDZS
115 Word of Honor + TYK + Word of Honor/TYK + Word of Honor/QY
(TYK and Word of Honor are different fandoms, but the way I get to those stories rarely differentiates between them because I most often search character or relationship tags, so I'm lumping them together here. This is not an argument that they are Exactly the Same).
The surprises for me here are less the top ones than that Xiyuan outstripped Zhou Zishu/Jing Beiyuan and Hanwenzhou. This was probably my bender post-finishing Qi Ye this year, it just feels like I spend more time on the first two. Also, the ones with no relationships listed: eight of you? really? not even an & relationship? (I didn't enter meta or resources on this list). Also, I think there's two whole Gao Xiaolian/Gu Xiang fics on here! \o/
Note: This says "first relationship listed" but occasionally while doing data entry I would instead input the most significant relationship tag, if it wasn't the first one. Largely this was because I didn't want to Hanwenzhou fics categorized under just Wenzhou/other first tags that didn't convey the actual focus of the fic. I chose to select only one relationship per fic bc honestly I did not want to figure out how to make more than one work for the spreadsheet.
Word count range: I chose the ranges I did because that is kind of how my brain breaks them up. Since this is for me, I went for that instead of like even divisions or whatever. Way, way more 1-5k than I thought there would be! I feel like I'm sometimes bad about reading shorter fic, but apparently I am not. I also expected more 50k+ but maybe a lot of my longfic reading has been going back to old favorites rather than trying new things.
